Smart lock or a photo on your phone: what stops the door doubt?

Updated November 3, 2026

If the front door is the thing you worry about most, a smart lock is a serious answer. You open an app, it tells you the door is locked, and if it isn't you can lock it from wherever you are. Many models also lock themselves after a set time.

That's more than One Loop can do, and it's worth saying plainly. One Loop can't see or control your lock. What it offers is cheaper, takes no installation and covers the other things you worry about, like the stove or your pills.

Choose Smart locks if

  • The front door is your main worry and you want to see its real status from anywhere.
  • You want the door to lock itself, or to lock it remotely for someone who forgot.
  • You want keyless entry or guest codes.
  • You own your home and don't mind the cost and setup.

Choose One Loop if

  • You worry about several things, not only the door.
  • You rent, or can't change the locks.
  • You want something that costs less and works today with no hardware.
  • You want a photo of the stove or a voice note about your pills alongside your door check.

Verdict

For the front door alone, a smart lock gives you something One Loop can't: live status and remote control. For everything else you check on the way out, One Loop is the simpler and cheaper option, and some people with smart locks use it for the stove and medication anyway.

Questions people ask

Does One Loop work with smart locks?

No. It doesn't connect to any locks or smart-home devices. It records that you checked.

Will a smart lock stop me worrying that I left the door unlocked?

For the door, being able to check its status from your phone helps many people. It won't help with the stove, iron or medication.

Can I use a smart lock in an apartment?

Some models fit over the existing deadbolt and can be removed, but check your lease and ask your landlord first.

Confirm it once. Stop wondering.

One Loop keeps a timestamped tap, voice note or photo of the things you do on autopilot. Free to try for 7 days.
